"Man From The South"

In the story, "man from the south," the soldier had the possibility of losing a bet, which included his little finger if he lost. Had the soldier lost the bet, he would more than likely lose up to 50% of his grip strength. A big part of this soldiers daily routine, an activity of his daily living, is more than likely shooting a gun. Using a gun as a soldier is very important and meaningful to fulfill that duty. This could be a problem for the soldier if he needed to have a strong, firm grip on a gun in order to fire it. Big guns, such as a shot gun, require a strong grasp with both hands, including the pinky, to ensure safety and precision. The soldier would have a hard time holding a shot gun firmly to ensure an accurate shot without a left pinky finger. The soldier could modify this but switching to a smaller gun where the left hand could provide secondary support to the right hand which would be the primary hand needed to shoot a smaller hand gun. The soldier could also use a leather glove on his left hand to create friction and ensure a stronger hold on the gun. With a hand gun, the right hand would have the power grip around the base with the pointer finger on the trigger. The left hand would not need as strong of a power grip, but merely just to provide a secondary support around the right hand and base of the gun to ensure safety and precision. Although hand dexterity is still functional without a pinky finger, power grip however is highly affected. Being a soldier is an important occupation, and using a gun is essential to your everyday life. This soldier could still participate in his everyday meaningful activities without a left pinky finger with a simple modification such as switching to using a smaller gun, or using a leather glove on a larger gun to create a modified hold and power grip. With the use of a smaller handgun rather than a shotgun, or a leather glove with larger guns, this soldier can have full occupational performance without a left pinky finger.
